Bienvenidos and welcome to Sacred Journey Cacao. We are excited and honored to share this rare and revered criollo cacao with you from our hearts and the heart of Mexico.

Chocolate is a divine, celestial drink, the sweat of the stars, the vital seed, divine nectar, the drink of the gods, panacea and universal medicine. – Geronimo Piperni

As dreamers and messengers of love, the Toltecs myth is that Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, was the planter of the cacao trees in the tropics of southern Mexico. He was called "the god of light, the giver of the drink of the gods, chocolate." Both the Mayans and Aztecs regarded chocolate as a potent aphrodisiac.

We at Freedom and Soul are honored to be a part of the magic, myth, and intent of this “Food of the Gods” to be a heart opening messenger of love in your life. Whether you prepare it to sip each day with your coffee or create a ceremony with the ones you love, we trust your heart will open to the ancient wisdom through this

 Sacred Journey Cacao.

All our love,

Stephanie & Jeremy

MAYA & AZTEC

The word cacao  originated from the Maya word Ka'kau',  as well as the  Maya words Chocol'ha. The verb chokola'j means 'to drink chocolate together'. Cacao was an intrinsic part of ancient Mayan and Aztec life, not just as a beverage or food, but as a pillar of their economies and an integral part of their religions, appearing in numerous spiritual ceremonies.

ALONG THE LINES OF HISTORY

From the time of its discovery by the Olmecs of Mesoamerica in 1500 B.C., Theobroma cacao has served many functions, used primarily as a source of food. Grown in pods attached to the trunk of a rather peculiar looking tree, the Olmecs recognized that there was more than met the eye to this peculiar plant. As they cracked open the pod to reveal a sweet, gelatinous pulp, they took more notice of the seeds within the milky substance, and began to process those seeds to create the very first iteration of cacao, or “kakawa” . As empires rose and fell, the subsequent Mesoamerican civilizations of the Izapan, Maya, Toltecs, and Aztecs also coveted cacao for its properties. Consumed primarily in the form of a frothed drink, it was a prized possession and available only to the elite—for it was godly potion that would grant energy and power, and was used in many rituals to appease their deities. These attributes were considered more than simply advantages; in these times, food and prayer were the only sources of medicine (Lippi). Source

If a nation's cuisine is the key to its heart, then chocolate is the portal to Mexico's soul. Almost 4,000 years ago its indigenous tribes were among the first in the world to cultivate cacao and turn the bitter beans into delicious things to eat and drink. The history of chocolate began in Mesoamerica. Fermented beverages made from chocolate date back to 450 BC. The Mexica believed that cacao seeds were the gift of Quetzalcoatl, the god of wisdom, and the seeds once had so much value that they were used as a form of currency.

Sacred Journey is honored to that their Cacao is made from the rare Criollo Cacao

Criollo is generally deemed to be the highest quality out of all the varieties of cocoa but also the most expensive. Criollo is often described as the 'grand cru ' of chocolates as it provides a fine flavor with rich aromas, leaves many secondary notes and is only mildly bitter. It is rarer and grown far less commonly around the world because it produces lower yields than the other varieties and is prone to fungi diseases and pests. It now makes up less than 1% of the world’s cocoa production.alt,  cayenne or any other spices  you are called to sprinkle in. My favorite is to simply add a little honey.

10. Be sure and say a prayer inviting the spirit of the cacao and any other specific  prayers into your heart and begin slowly sipping.

11. Enjoy your Sacred Journey Cacao Ceremony

For those of you who have ordered a bag of the Sacred Journey Cacao and asked about preparing it to use in your coffee, shakes or on a regular basis, here is a simple tutorial from our cacao maker along with a simple recipe.

Cacao has the highest antioxidant concentration of any major food in the world. Cacao is thirty times higher in antioxidants than red wine, twenty times more potent in antioxidants than blueberries, three times higher than acai, and twice as much as chaga mushrooms. These antioxidants protect our cells from free radical damage and therefore contribute to our longevity and state of well-being.

Every study on chocolate is pointing to the same conclusion: there is something in chocolate that is really good for us. That something is the raw cacao bean, the nut that all chocolate is made from.  Cacao beans are probably the best kept secret in the entire history of food.
